The CASL program (Creativity, Activity, Service and Lasallian Values) is unique to SJII and an integral part of the learning program. Commencing in 2023, the program allows students to engage with and reflect on a wide range of enriching and experiential learning opportunities that are facilitated and/or supported by the school.
The CASL program is designed to prepare students for the externally prescribed CAS program which is a mandatory component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma program while simultaneously presenting students with an opportunity to display and reflect upon the importance and place of Lasallian Values within our school community.
The program is broken up into three cycles aligned to key learning stages. In grades 7- 8 students will engage with the two-year foundational program followed by two 18-month programs in grades 9-10 and 11-12 to account for the rigour of external examination periods. By design, the program takes students on a journey from dependence to independence as outlined below:
In grades 7 and 8 the CASL program is embedded in curriculum content taught by subject teachers and supported by tutors. Students will also participate in a range of experiences facilitated by the CCA program.
In grades 9 and 10 students' engagement with CASL transitions with all experiences taking place either before or after school. Students are supported by the CCA program but may also participate in experiences within the community. In this way, students are encouraged to demonstrate greater independence and ownership over their learning journey.
In grades 11 and 12, students will again engage with experiences outside of school hours. Experiences may include CCAs, community facilitated learning opportunities and/or student-developed activities. Senior students must meet the fulfillment criteria stipulated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation including the need to carry out a student-led project.
Please note: Service learning initiatives/experiences introduced, supported by, and facilitated within Grades 9-10 subject areas may be added to a student's CAS portfolio owing to the fact that they require significant commitment outside of the classroom. However, this does not exempt Grades 9-10 students from supporting Service CCAs.
