Service Learning is one of the core pillars of learning at SJI International and we strive to provide opportunities for every student, from grades 7 to 12, to engage with the community meaningfully in order to deepen their understanding of local issues, make connections to global issues, and to develop skills that will equip them to be positive contributors to societies in the future. (To learn more about service at SJII visit the student managed website).
In Grades 7-8 students are encouraged to engage with service opportunities though this is not an expectation. Students can sign up for service CCAs, join the service council or support one of the many fundraising or advocacy initiatives that that place each year. Students will engage in direct and indirect service through curriculum links, especially in geography and science and use their knowledge and understanding to have a meaningful and measurable impact when they attend school trips.
In Grades 9-10, students must support two school-based service CCAs during the 18-month CASL program. Students will be informed of this commitment expectation and know which of the terms they need to support a local and or international service organisation or initiative. This is an important step in preparing students for grades 11 and 12 where they must take greater ownership and demonstrate independence when completing the externally prescribed CAS requirements in order to attain their IB Diploma.
