Learning at SJI International aims to develop the whole person through academic rigour, and by providing opportunities for character growth through service to others, physical challenge, and cultural and spiritual immersion. Our learning program has four distinct pillars: Academic; Outdoor Education; Service Learning; and Co-Curricular Activities, all of which are underpinned by our commitment to pastoral care and our Lasallian values. Throughout our Enrichment program, we aim to encourage our students to try new things, develop lifelong passions, and promote leadership opportunities.
The CASL program (Creativity, Activity, Service and Lasallian Values) is unique to SJII and an integral part of the learning program. Commencing in 2023, the program allows students to engage with and reflect on a wide range of enriching and experiential learning opportunities that are facilitated and/or supported by the school.
During the CASL program students will complete three CASL cycles aligned with key learning stages (Grades 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12).
By design, the CASL program takes students on a journey from dependence to independence:
In Grades 7-8 CASL is principally embedded within curriculum and facilitated by subject teachers.
In Grades 9-10 CASL is aligned with the NYAA program and supported by school-facilitated CCAs an experiences which take place outside of school hours.
In grades 11 and 12, students will again engage with experiences outside of school hours with students required to meet the fulfillment criteria stipulated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation including the need to carry out a student-led service project.
Students are expected to engage in enriching learning experiences continuously for at least 18 months or 24 months for grades 7 and 8 students.
Students are expected to sign up for a minimum of one CCA per term.
Deciding what to do and when is part of how they plan, organise and balance their own/individual learning journey.
The main purpose of CASL is to encourage students to take a break from studying and do something different promoting balance.
Students complete a CASL Portfolio, which includes evidence to show what experiences they have undertaken and ongoing reflections to consider what they have achieved.
Students will have the opportunity to talk to their tutors throughout the experience in formal and informal interviews and discussions.
